Astronaut Discloses Depression In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Harassment After Historic Trip

A pioneering space traveler has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – celebrated as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission earlier this year, which also included well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the pioneer for her community, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an torrent of sexist abuse.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, describing a supportive conversation from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the journey.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on women's health research and operated research during the mission, said every professional achievement – including her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her roots – was buried under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is best known for her tireless campaigning fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after surviving a rape during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since achieving her goal, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the followers whose messages of encouragement were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She concluded that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had come out of the flight, including increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed Texas in April, carrying the all-female team on a short trip that exceeded the edge of space.

The group of women also included leaders in different industries.

The venture behind the mission is a private space firm founded by a well-known tech mogul.
