“That was unfortunate. It was essentially an exchange with our fans out in front of us,” Jones stated during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”
He further emphasized that the signal was entirely accidental, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. Should you call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”
League Precedent for Owner Fines
This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been fined for misconduct. Previous cases involve:
- Panthers owner David Tepper was fined $300,000 for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
- Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.
Jones, who is known for his publicity flair, possesses an approximate wealth of $16 billion, so the fine easily payable for the wealthy owner.
