Fed Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on Wednesday, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Highlights Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the economy in August was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to publish September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release once the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are rising, although gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
