Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Get comfortable with your loved one and watch Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like standard biological terror, but within Together exists a deep contemplation about our choices in loving each other.

A Directorial Debut Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have been together for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie bring a unique chemistry to their roles, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The plot commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the big city to the country for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, sure, but that’s primarily where the cliches conclude. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but never too gross) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his reluctance to chase only his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve moved to the country and far away from his support system. He dreads the idea of completely losing his sense of self in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in Together avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple face the type of challenges that arise in long-term unions over a long period. Fundamentally, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the symbolism never feels clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples having disagreements found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your partner and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an exploration you can undertake right now.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
