Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights impacting 6,000 passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminals use a approach that remains especially affected by weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
