Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

England opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments from captain Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes against Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," said the England leader.

However, following Crawley made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" observation after his side were beaten in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, he said his team had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley stated the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had stayed consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do something special going into this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant England 207-6 in pursuit of a daunting total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the last day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England fell the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in England in eight days, has the outcome of the urn been decided so quickly. Australia have also triumphed in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disheartening," admitted Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good team. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They entered as the favourites and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his immediate place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 runs in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record against Australia.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in the Ashes and recorded a poorer average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion his teammate is under the microscope originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
